About

Hej, I'm Felix Amberg—a photographer based in Heidelberg, Germany, who is currently taking steps to transition from street to documentary photography. Alongside my interest in photography, I studied Political Science + Development and Health Economics in Heidelberg, Paris, and Mannheim. Currently, I am doing a PhD at the Heidelberg University Hospital and the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health in the field of Humanitarian Public Health/Conflict & Health. My research focuses on healthcare provision in conflict zones, particularly in Burkina Faso and the broader Sub-Saharan Africa region.

Photography has long been a part of my life, especially street photography. However, the more I engage with the medium, the more I am drawn to documentary photography—not only as a form of capturing the human experience but also as a tool to shed light on socially relevant topics and advocate for change.

In the future, I aim to merge my scientific work with my photography. Therefore, after a few first projects, I plan to focus more on health-related topics, to ideally be able to collaborate with humanitarian NGOs after completing my PhD—both as a researcher and as a documentary photographer. I hope my academic background and research into similar topics will help me contextualize my future photographs and place them within a broader framework. For instance, I plan to photograph in Burkina Faso in the coming years to visually represent key aspects of my research through a photo story. Additionally, I intend to undertake personal projects outside the scope of my professional work.
To prepare myself thoroughly for this work, alongside my dissertation, I have immersed myself in documentary photography—through literature, online courses, interviews, and workshops. It was particularly important for me to understand the ethical, moral, and practical considerations as well as the criticisms of this form of photography. Before working on projects, I wanted to familiarize myself with these aspects to ensure that I approach documentary photography in a respectful, responsible, transparent, and reflective manner. Now, I am at a point where I want to start my own projects and gain journalistic experience.

If you are interested in exchanging ideas or mentoring me, I would love to hear from you! Please also feel free to contact me for assignments, collaborations, or prints.
